FEATURED VENDOR | An Interview with Blackstone Caterers

Wedding Caterers in RI

Food is always a large portion of a couple’s wedding planning budget – not only should the food look good, but it should taste good too! Presentation and your experience working with the company is often just as important. That was key for my husband and I when we were planning our wedding for July 2013 at Glen Manor. At Glen Manor, we were given a list of ten caterers to choose from. All ten were familiar with the venue so we made sure to reach out to a few to see what our options were. Karen Riley Tungett, Sales Manager for Blackstone Caterers, immediately replied to our email inquiry with a welcome packet and some information on what Blackstone offered their clients and what to expect. As a business owner, I was super excited that she replied so quickly and seemed just as excited about our wedding as we were!

We were well into chatting and planning to meet before the “other caterers” even responded to our interest. Not only was Karen pleasant to speak with, everyone at Blackstone was friendly and professional. They were very detail orientated as the wedding day approached and went above and beyond on our wedding day. Over a year after our wedding, our guests are still raving about the food and drinks! Thank you Karen and the Blackstone Caterers team!

Since Blackstone is so A-MAZING I thought it would be a great idea to feature them on our blog to let other couples know how awesome they are. Here’s what Karen had to say on behalf of Blackstone Caterers:

Q: Can you tell us where and when Blackstone Caterers started?
A: Blackstone started in Central Falls, RI in 1945; we catered to all the mill workers in the Blackstone River Valley area.

Q: What types of events do you service?
A: Blackstone Caterers in a full service catering company. We also caterer galas and have a drop off style for smaller events.

Q: Who is your ideal client?
A: A wedding within 25 miles of our business for 150 people that includes fun hors d’oeuvres and some fun cocktails and a raw bar. Followed by a seated dinner and a beautiful dessert buffet. We love when our clients truly appreciate good food and service!

Q: What are some of the most popular items that are ordered?
A: That really depends on the season. Typically for cocktail hour, our raw bar set up is beautiful and the seafood is all fresh and local. The Mignonettes are all house made, beautiful in color and taste delicious!
For hors D’oeuvres: the Scallop Wrapped in Bacon, Feta and Watermelon, Clam Chowder and Clam Cake, Crab Cakes, Petite Beef Burger with Caramelized Onion Jam and Blue Cheese, Grilled Cilantro Shrimp served with a Fresh Mango Salsa, Lobster Salad on a Petite Buttered Grilled Bun, “Garden Cone” – Whipped Herbed Ricotta and Chèvre Cheese, Cherry Tomato and Broccoli Sprouts in a Tomato Cone.
For Summer Wedding Entrée:
– Lemon Herb Roasted Chicken Breast, Goat Cheese Potato Pancake, Farm stand Corn Salad, Pan Sauce
– Oven Seared Halibut, Citrus Risotto, Snap Beans and Chimichurri Sauce
– Gorgonzola Crusted Filet Mignon, roasted Tomato & Zucchini Tart, Green Beans, Demi Glace
– Grilled New York Top Strip, Corn Soufflé, Grilled Zucchini and Summer Squash, Port Wine Demi Glace

{is your mouth watering yet?}

Q: What trends can we expect to see in 2014/2015?
A: More elaborate dessert stations, clients are having a little more fun with their cocktail hour menu. The couples are very much into food and the bar; signature cocktails are a HUGE trend too. Clients are upgraded to beautiful linens, china and glassware.

Q: How do you differ from other catering companies?
A: We cook EVERYTHING on site and we use all local foods when possible. Our fish is locally caught and come in fresh to us every day! My staff is amazing! They are all hired by my team and they go through extensive training before they can come on an event. We have a core staff of about 50 employees that work with us every season!

Q: What advice can you offer to couples as they consider caterers to meet with?
A:  – Make sure there are no hidden charges
– Ask if the employees are their own or from a staffing agency
– Ask if the careering company cooks on site
– Ask if where they purchase their food from
– Ask who will be on site for their event
– Ask if the caterer has worked at the venue where they are hosting their event
– Ask how many weddings does the caterer do per evening

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
A: Blackstone’s pricing is flexible. If you have ideas come talk to us – bring your questions/pictures so we can make your vision a reality! If you like good food and excellent service, you are a “Blackstone Bride”
