FEATURED VENDOR | An Interview with Little Birdie Papercraft

I was introduced to Lesli Ann, the owner of Little Birdie Papercraft, by my wedding planner when we are interviewing designers for our stationary needs.  Lesli Ann was highly recommended by our wedding planner {Infinite Events} so we decided to schedule a meeting. We liked that she was super organized, easy to communicate with, fun and very creative. Within the first 5 minutes of meeting with her, we knew we had to hire her for our stationary needs. She took an idea that we had for Save The Dates (35mm film reels) and was able to turn our idea into reality. Our wedding guests LOVED them and it was “so us” {being wedding photographers}! For invitations, we went more formal for our back tie reception. Lesli Ann was very helpful in recommending paper types, font, colors, and was mindful on sizes for shipping. Our wedding invitations really set the tone for our wedding. We also had her design favor cards for a donation which came out great too.

It is important to note that Lesli Ann doesn’t just work with engaged couples. She also has corporate clients as well. She is always mindful of her clients budgets. Now we refer her to all of our clients no matter what their needs are we know Lesli-Ann can take care of them.

Q: How did Little Birdie start and how did you select the name?
A: The idea behind Little Birdie actually began when I was a teenager and had a love for rubber stamping and card-making.  I have always enjoyed creating with paper, whether it be greeting and holiday cards, posters, banners or a perfectly wrapped gift.  I knew at some point I would find a way to do what I love for a living.   I also think there is nothing better than walking out to the mailbox, opening it up and finding a real, hand-written letter!  It seems strange, but we all know that we secretly love getting things other than bills!   So I began making cards, stationery, and invitations for friends and family.  In 2009 I opened Little Birdie as  a retail store in Pawtuxet Village as a way to sell my greeting cards and market my invitations.  Over the next three years, my invitation design services quickly became my most popular service so I moved from the village and Little Birdie is a now a full service Stationery Design Studio.

The name Little Birdie is actually a nickname given to me by my husband when we were first dating.  We lived in different cities for a period of time and would spend late nights on the phone.  When his friends and coworkers asked him why he looked so tired he would say it was because he had a Little Birdie chirping in his ear all night.  The nickname stuck.  When thinking of names for my business, I thought it was a fun way to represent my work and myself.   Little Birdie is me; in name, and in every element that it represents as a stationery business.

Q: What types of events do you service?
A: Although a large portion of our business is for weddings, we can produce stationery and invitations for any event.  We also offer business branding services and paper goods to other local small businesses.

Q: What do you offer your clients?
A: I offer client’s full service design and production of invitations, announcements and social stationery.

Q: Who is your client?
A: My clients range in age and demographic.  Because I can offer products for any type of event I have the pleasure of working with a fabulous variety of clients.  I have worked with children on birthday invites or religious events; couples celebrating engagements, weddings, and anniversaries; new or expecting parents/grandparents; local shop owners; and non-profit organizations.

Q: What trends can we expect to see in 2015 & 2016 for invitations?
A: Invitation trends this year seem to show a bit of Modern meets Classic.

  • The 2015 Pantone Color of the years is Marsala – a deep reddish burgundy color.  I expect that bold colors will start to make their way into design in order to stand out against the soft blushes and neutrals popular in 2014.
  • There is also a great deal of emphasis on Font/Typography-based designs.  Handwritten and calligraphy fonts are very popular right now and these pair nicely with another trending style — Foil Stamping in gold, silver and pearl.
  • Custom Illustrations and watercolors are also very popular. This is a unique way to bring in some whimsy to a more traditional invitation.  Finally, Nature and Folksy Woodland designs continue to be the popular choice for the rustic, backyard, and outdoor events.

Q: What do you offer that your competitors don’t?
A: ME!   Whether it is invitations for an event, stationery for a small business, or holiday cards for a family, I produce their items with the same level of care that I would for my own items.  I firmly believe every client should be treated is if they were my ONLY client, because my customers allow me to be part of some of the most important days of their lives.  I respect and embrace this, and make customer service paramount.  This is the cornerstone of my business, and the mentality that sets me apart from other stationery stores.

Q: Anything else we should know?
A: Little Birdie just recently launched our new and improved website and I am so proud and excited to share it with people.  I also have a new line of ready-to-order invitations called the Studio Collection and these can be found on the new site.  In the next few weeks I will be adding Save the Date announcements, Day Of Wedding Items, Thank You cards and Personal Stationery as part of the ready-to-order items.

I will also be attending the National Stationery Show in New York in May and hope to find out what exciting things are to come for 2016!
