FEATURED VENDOR: An Interview with Sin

Last week we sat down and met with Jennifer Luxmoore of Sin located just down the street from us on Allen’s Ave in Providence. We can’t say enough good things about Sin! If you are looking for an awesome cake that not only looks good, but tastes amazing – look no further than Sin! Read on to learn more about Sin:

Q: How did Sin come about?
A: Sin opened in 2007, after years of working in radio broadcasting Jennifer who loved baking as a child with her grandmother, decided to make a career change. In January 2007, after school and a short stint baking at Restaurant Oak, Jennifer decided to find her own location and Sin was born. We started out making wedding cakes and quickly grew. Sin now offers cakes, sculpted cakes and desserts for any event.

Q: What do you offer?
A: Sin is the bakery for people who love good food. We bake from scratch and our rule is “not too sweet!” We try to reduce the sugar levels a little bit so the flavor of the chocolate, the vanilla, the fruit comes thru and isn’t covered up by too much sweet!

Q: What is the craziest cake request you have received?
A: We’ve had some strange cake requests! We did a 3-d yoda as a surprise for a groom, we did a replica of the Superman building in downtown Providence, and we did an (almost) life size replica of the evil dead poster, we were worried about that one fitting in the car!

Q: Any piece of advice you can give potential clients when they are interviewing bakeries for their event?
A: When hiring a baker have some ideas of designs that you like to show them and discuss. Taste the product. Tell them if you have a budget and what it is, most bakeries will work with you to get your business. Also realize that some of the designs may require fondant. Don’t choose a fondant design and ask for it in buttercream, it won’t turn out the same.

Q: What is your favorite cake flavor?
A: Hmmm..we don’t have just one favorite cake… it depends on our mood… chocolate chip is always a favorite, but sometimes we’re in the mood for the coconut with passionfruit buttercream or something really rich like the chocolate bourbon, and red velvet is always in the top 5.

Q: Why should you hire Sin over someone else?
A: We’re in our 8th year, so we know what we’re doing. We really love cake, so our product is great, we do recipe testing every year! We have great decorators who can paint, sculpt and pipe almost anything. And if we can’t do it, we’ll refer you to someone who can (though that’s rare! We can do a lot! )

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL: My husband and I hired Sin to create our wedding cake. We found a cake on Pinterest that we fell in love with. During our tasting we got to select 5 flavors we wanted to try and Jennifer sat down with us to design a cake based on the image we found online. She tweeked it a bit based on our guest count and just her down design ideas. It not only looked fabulous, but tasted A-MAZING! We decided on chocolate with raspberry filling. The best part was – it there were real raspberries/seeds in the filling – not the red gel that the other bakeries use! Jennifer was quick to respond to my emails, explained how the process worked and delivered everything on time. I highly recommend Sin to my friends and wedding clients!
